Gigi Di Biagio congratulated the Italy Under-21 players who stepped up to the senior squad and prepares for an Azzurrini meeting with Germany.
The Azzurrini were beaten 2-1 by England in a friendly, despite having numerous scoring opportunities, and they face their German counterparts in another test on Monday.
“The lads put in a good performance against England, as we were up against one of the top teams in Europe at Under-21 level and, despite the result, I am very happy with what we saw and the responses given by all the players,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
“Now we have to remember that if we don’t score goals, we don’t win games, so we have to take our chances when we have such clear scoring opportunities. It’s happened too many times, both the other night and in previous games, so we’ve got to be more effective.
“When we create so many chances, sooner or later the time will come when we score with every shot on target.”
It’s an issue that has also plagued the senior Italy squad, but some of the Under-21s have made the step up for Tuesday’s friendly against the USA.
Juventus striker Moise Kean, Atalanta defender Gianluca Mancini and Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali could get their senior Italy debuts.
“We are all happy to see them make the step up, as it’s always a victory for us. It’ll also give us the opportunity to test out some other faces here.
“Progress is great, so is entertaining football, but we’ve got to start winning games and making our performances count.
“We dominated England for long periods and I can only be satisfied. Germany are top of the UEFA ranking at Under-21 level and I expect a tough match that will help my lads gain experience.”
