This is the first ever Serie A meeting between the two clubs and they only met in Serie B on six occasions, between 1947-50.

Empoli are in remarkably good shape after winning both games under new Coach Iachini, so a third on the bounce would be their best run in the top flight since December 2015.

They fought back from two goals down to beat Atalanta 3-2 last week, surprisingly leaving Miha Zajc on the bench for a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Ciccio Caputo leads the attack with support from Antonino La Gumina and Rade Krunic, but Francesco Vicari is back in defence after injury.

SPAL focus on Andrea Petagna and Mirco Antenucci in attack, with Jasmin Kurtic and Mohamed Fares on the wings.

SPAL: Gomis; Cionek, Vicari, Felipe, Lazzari; Kurtic, Schiattarella, Missiroli, Fares; Antenucci, Petagna

Empoli: Provedel; Di Lorenzo, Silvestre, Maietta, Veseli; Pasqual, Bennacer, Traore; Krunic, La Gumina; Caputo
