Palermo have been sold to a UK company called Global Futures Sports, with former Sampdoria and Bari player David Platt as consultant.

The Serie B club was sold for a symbolic fee of €10 last week, although President Maurizio Zamparini pointed out the €22.8m in debt was being taken on, plus a pledge to invest consistently in the squad.

The name of the company was a mystery, but Global Futures Sports CEO Clive Richardson confirmed they are the new owners in his interview with popeconomy.tv.

“We looked at a number of opportunities in the footballing world over the last six months or so, and believe Palermo there’s a great opportunity for the club, it’s heritage.

“It has a special role in the community. We believe the club is in a great position right now and we don’t want to jeopardise that.

“We represent a group of investors from the UK, but we believe that in the future there will be the opportunity for other investors to come on board within the structure we are creating when we acquire Palermo.

“We are looking at the opportunity to redevelop the facilities the club has. We’ve seen numerous examples in football around Europe that if you are able to put in a new stadium, training ground facilities, etc, then the club can benefit tremendously from that.

“We don’t just look at it from an investment perspective, we have a board of advisors who come from the footballing world. For this opportunity, because it’s in Italy, one of the members of our board is David Platt, who has both played and managed in Italy.

“So David has come down to Palermo as we try to move this situation forward.”
