Walter Mazzarri believes Torino would’ve beaten Milan if one of their early chances had gone in, but then “ran out of energy.”

While the visitors forced two very difficult saves out of Gianluigi Donnarumma and held possession for long periods, the Rossoneri wasted golden opportunities through Suso, Gonzalo Higuain and Patrick Cutrone.

The 0-0 result keeps Toro in sixth place, ahead of Roma and three points behind Lazio in fifth.

“When you play this well against a team this good in their own stadium, you have to take the lead,” moaned Mazzarri to Sky Sport Italia.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t do that. We should’ve been sharper in our final moves, as at times we pegged Milan back. When they frightened us with a couple of counter-attacks, we got worried and then in the final 20 minutes we were the ones being pegged back.

“I am convinced that if just one or even two of our first half chances had gone in, we’d have brought home all three points. Clearly, a point at San Siro against a Milan side that had a full complement from the midfield up is not to be snubbed.

“Towards the end, we ran out of energy and paid a little for the strains of Thursday’s Coppa Italia game.”

Torino’s next match is against runaway Serie A leaders Juventus in the Derby della Mole.

“At the moment they seem to be invincible, but they’ve got to slip up eventually. Tonight’s performance gives us confidence going into the derby, even though we’ve seen that playing well against Juve isn’t necessarily enough to bring home a result.”
