Mark van Bommel claims ‘maybe we’d have gone through’ if Samir Handanovic was sent off in PSV’s first Champions League match against Inter.

PSV held Inter to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday, costing the Nerazzurri a place in the last 16, and Van Bommel suggested it was revenge for Handanovic not seeing red after he appeared to handle outside the box when the Beneamata won in Eindhoven earlier in the season.

“I think we played pretty well, with a lot of bravery,” he said after the game.

“Given the start we made in the Champions League, you could see the difference in our play at San Siro.

“The changes we made were tactical. We didn’t have any injuries. It’d have been incredible if we went through, but you have to be realistic.

“Our first match against Inter was crucial. Handanovic had to be sent off and maybe we’d have gone through, but two points are better than one.

“Our group was very difficult, but we can learn a lot from these matches. We could’ve won and had four points, but two points are better than one.

“Inter? I don’t care about Barcelona-Tottenham. In the Champions League, we’ve shown that we can compete with everyone. Getting a point at San Siro is beautiful.”
