That cost was already raising eyebrows, but when UEFA ruled Milan would have €12m in Europa League participation revenue withheld, their squad cut down to 21 players for the next two seasons and a European ban restored if they don’t break even by 2021, it becomes unsustainable.
Multiple sources from Sky Sport Italia to the Corriere della Sera and various others claim owners Elliott Management are not keen on going through with the extra expense of keeping a player who turned 31 this month.
Higuain has scored seven goals in 16 competitive games this season, the same tally as youth product Patrick Cutrone in 18 appearances.
However, Cutrone has a better goals per minutes played average of 137 compared to 197 for Pipita.
Some reports go even further, as Rai Sport claim Milan could cut the loan deal short to get his salary off their books and send Higuain to Chelsea.
He would reunite with former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, who could in turn send misfiring Alvaro Morata elsewhere.
