Ex-Sampdoria fan favourite Antonio Cassano “offered himself to Genoa, but he was on a downward spiral,” revealed President Enrico Preziosi.

The forward has still not retired, but had several attempts at a comeback and abandoned them within days at Hellas Verona and Virtus Entella.

Incredibly, he even considered crossing the city to Samp’s arch rivals Genoa.

Incredibly, he even considered crossing the city to Samp’s arch rivals Genoa.

“It’s true, he offered himself to us, but then got into a loop of confused decisions, the type you see in someone on a downward spiral,” Genoa President Preziosi told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.

“When he was in good shape, he did make the difference. I would’ve signed him, but his past at Sampdoria wasn’t helpful.

“I took a Pontius Pilate approach and washed my hands of it, telling him to have a chat with (then Coach Ivan) Juric, but he didn’t want to meet with Antonio.”
