Joao Mario had been in a similar position when returning from a loan with West Ham, but after weeks of being ignored, managed to find his way back into the squad and started several big games.

Gabriel Barbosa hopes he can follow the same path and convince Spalletti of his abilities.

Inter paid €29.5m to sign Gabigol from Santos in the summer of 2016, but he didn’t make a single Serie A start.

A loan spell at Benfica was also cut short and he rediscovered confidence and form at Santos.
