Bologna patron Joey Saputo warned “the plan must change and it will change” with strong investments to go from relegation contenders to European competition.

The Rossoblu are currently sitting in the bottom three, but have brought in Villarreal pair Nicola Sansone and Roberto Soriano.

“As we start the year, I want to assure our fans and our partners that under no uncertain terms is relegation an option for us,” said the Canadian businessman who also owns MLS club Montreal Impact in a video message.

“We have worked too hard and invested too much over the last three years to be in the position we are in today.

“As I look at our current situation, I question what was done and what needs to be done to ensure we never find ourselves in this position in future.

“As are you, I too am concerned, but I don’t want my silence over the last few weeks to be confused with indifference towards our club. My actions moving forward will speak louder than words.

“The investment made with the first two reinforcements of this 2019 transfer window speaks volumes to my desire to remain in Serie A.

“With the addition of both Nicola (Sansone) and Roberto (Soriano), who I want to personally welcome, I feel we have a group of players, technical staff and employees that are dedicated to this project, and with the potential to add more players from now to the end of the transfer window, should be proof that we intend to build for a brighter future with the base that we will have.

“Without getting ahead of ourselves or losing focus for this season, I want to assure our supporters, fans, media and partners that Bologna FC are preparing a new investment plan moving forward.

“I’ve always said that my responsibility was to bring Bologna FC back to international competition. That still remains my goal, but to get there the plan must change and it will change.

“Until then, I need you to stay engaged. The club needs you to stay connected and the players need you to stay energised. We are one and together we are stronger. We will get through this difficult period and when we do, we together will reap the benefits of that fight.

“Thank you and Forza Bologna.”
