Zinedine Zidane left Real Madrid because he wanted to sell Gareth Bale rather than Cristiano Ronaldo, claims Ramon Calderon.

Zidane’s decision to walk away at the end of last season following a record third consecutive Champions League trophy surprised many.

It was followed a few weeks later by Ronaldo’s €100m transfer to Juventus and it seems the two were connected.

“Zidane insisted on keeping Cristiano and selling Bale,” former President Calderon told AS.

“Zidane insisted on keeping Cristiano and selling Bale,” former President Calderon told AS.

“Instead, Perez did the opposite. Zidane wanted to have decision-making power when it came to signing and selling players, but his suggestions were ignored, so he decided to move on.

“Zidane made the right decision.”
