Former Italy boss Giampiero Ventura insists ‘I would’ve resigned even if we beat Sweden’ and that he did ‘a lot of work’ to revive Chievo.

Ventura became the most unpopular CT in modern history after he failed to take Italy to the 2018 World Cup, courtesy of defeat to Sweden in the playoffs.

“I was lucky enough to make good decisions for so many years, but taking the Italy job was the wrong decision because it was something that I should never have done,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“There were so many untrue things that bothered me, but I can confirm that I would’ve resigned even if we beat Sweden.

“I regret seeing my image linked to that of CT and not Coach. I have great desire to keep coaching because it’s my life, and I want to take back the past year-and-a-half that’s been written off

“I’d like to start over. The eternal flame is burning brighter than when I started out.”

The 71-year-old attempted a comeback at Chievo earlier in the season but lasted just four games before walking out on the Flying Donkeys, who have picked up form in recent weeks.

“There were two problems at Chievo: the players’ condition, which wasn’t so good as we had seven players injured, and their morale because of the points deduction,” he continued.

“Mental blocs had been created, but in our month together we scored a lot of goals and there was a lot of work being done to restore the players’ belief.

“That work gave Di Carlo a team able to play for 90 minutes at a high intensity, something that wasn’t possible before.

“What Pellissier said about the players feeling betrayed was dictated by anger and disappointment.”
