The 1-1 draw at San Siro was only secured thanks to Handanovic denying Luis Muriel from the spot in the final minutes.

That was the 24th penalty that the Slovenia international has kept out from 79 faced in the Italian top flight.

It gives Handanovic a save rate of 30 per cent in Serie A. There were also six that were missed.

In all competition, the 35-year-old has parried 39 out of 107 penalties during his career, which comes to 36.4 per cent.

“What happens in the dressing room stays in the dressing room,” he told DAZN when asked the mood of his teammates after this draw.

“We knew that it was a difficult match against Atalanta, as they’ve been playing with the same coach for many years, have strong players and have proved themselves both in Italy and Europe.

“I thought our first half was very good, while Atalanta pinned us back after the break, so I feel the draw is the right result.”

This means that if Juventus beat Roma on Sunday, the Bianconeri will go clear at the top of the Serie A table and be crowned Winter Champions.

“All we must focus on is improving ourselves, because tonight’s game proves we have a lot that still needs to be improved.”
