The fixture had originally been at a more convenient hour of the day, but it was moved on the orders of the authorities amid fears of crowd trouble.

Due to that decision, Genoa ultras are boycotting the game and will be outside the stadium.

This has been a very tense time for Milan and 2019 started on absolutely the wrong foot.

While they squeezed past Sampdoria in extra time in the Coppa Italia, they lost to Juventus in the Supercoppa on Wednesday in Jeddah.

That looks to have been the final appearance in a Milan jersey for Higuain, who has been left out of the squad for this trip because his mind is focused entirely on joining Chelsea.

Coach Gennaro Gattuso confessed in his Press conference that the player was “not ready to do battle” with his current team, so Cutrone leads the attack with Suso returning from a combination of suspension and injury, with Fabio Borini pushing Hakan Calhanoglu into a midfield spot.

Changes are forced upon them by bans for Alessio Romagnoli, Davide Calabria and Franck Kessie. Gattuso himself is also suspended for insulting the referee during the Supercoppa and is in the stands.

Long-term absentees Lucas Biglia, Jack Bonaventura and Mattia Caldara add to the list, so Ignazio Abate gets the nod rather than Andrea Conti.

Lucas Paquetá has started every game since his €35m transfer from Flamengo and the 21-year-old is again counted on.

There are rumours Jose Mauri or Andrea Bertolacci will be heading to Genoa as part of the Piatek deal after they turned down Alen Halilovic.

Speaking of which, Cesare Prandelli’s Genoa cannot count on their Capocannoniere because he is suspended, meaning the Poland international won’t have to face his future teammates.

Instead, Christian Kouame supports ex-Inter veteran Goran Pandev in a new 4-4-2 formation.

Former Udinese wing-back Giuseppe Pezzella was expected to make his debut for Genoa just days after arriving on loan with €7m option to buy, but instead Darko Lazovic and Romulo take the wide roles.

Milan have won four of their last six Serie A meetings with Genoa, losing one and drawing the other.
