Simone Inzaghi felt Lazio “did not deserve to lose. Football is cruel, because I don’t recall seeing Juventus struggle that much.”

The Aquile had dominated for an hour and took the lead through an Emre Can own goal, but Joao Cancelo came off the bench and changed the game.

He scored the equaliser from a Thomas Strakosha parry, then was brought down by Senad Lulic for a late Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

“This season I don’t recall in Italy or Europe seeing Juventus struggle that much. We had nine shots on target to three, so many corners. Football is cruel, we did not deserve defeat, but if we continue playing like that, we’ll make our fans happy,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I hugged all my players one by one at the final whistle, because they put in a fantastic performance. The only negative was the result.

“If you don’t get the second goal against Juve, you will pay for it. We tried everything, goal-line clearances, great Wojciech Szczesny saves.

“The lads worked so hard, chased everyone down starting from the strikers to the defenders. Juve only made us go deep occasionally and never really forced Thomas Strakosha into a save.

“It was a great performance and I am above all sad for them, because they didn’t deserve to lose. I don’t remember a Strakosha save.

“Of course, when you concede a goal, there is always an error in there somewhere. On the equaliser, it went through a defender’s legs and Strakosha didn’t see it. On the penalty, Lulic didn’t realise Cancelo was offside and he could’ve left him.

“We should’ve made it 2-0, those chances with Luis Alberto and Immobile. It’s disappointing, but I am proud of this group and playing with this hunger, we will go far.

“I had asked for the team to show character against a big club, something we haven’t always managed. We were aggressive, solid, strong, caused Juve more problems than anyone else this season, but football is cruel and if you don’t take your chances, that’s a problem.”
