Marco Borriello has officially terminated his playing contract with Spanish minnows UD Ibiza but will continue to work ‘alongside’ their President.

Borriello only joined Ibiza last summer, having left SPAL on a free transfer, but made just seven appearances for the islanders without scoring a goal and last played in the Spanish third tier over two months ago.

“I can inform you all that I’ve rescined, by mutual consent with the club, my sporting contract with Ibiza,” the 36-year-old wrote on Instagram.

“I take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to President Amadeo Salvo and all the staff, as well as the city of Ibiza.

“I also wish the team all the best and I’ll always be a fan. It’s also for this reason that I decided to settle my contract in advance so the club can operate in the transfer market in the best way for the pursuit of the pre-established objectives.

“Therefore my footballing adventure ends in the city, but my sporting project will continue with UD Ibiza.

“I will therefore stay alongside the President, from whom I’d like to learn as much as possible with a view to my next professional experience.”

The 36-year-old’s statement suggests he is planning to retire from professional football and take the executive route.

Borriello scored 96 goals for the likes of Milan, Roma, Juventus, Genoa, Atalanta, Cagliari and SPAL in Serie A, as well as picking up seven Italy caps.
