The centre-back turns 28 on Friday and has been in Germany since leaving Inter in 2013.
Benevento confirmed the move today after his 80 appearances in the Bundesliga, but he has not played at all so far this season.
The globetrotting Italian also played for Vitesse, Brescia, Cesena and SV Damstadt in his career.
