Suso believes Milan have the ‘perfect’ Coach in Gennaro Gattuso but insists ‘it’s not fair’ to expect too much from Krzysztof Piatek and Lucas Paqueta.
Victory over Cagliari this weekend will let Gattuso’s Milan take back fourth place in Serie A, while Piatek and Paqueta have already been compared to Rossoneri greats Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka.
“It’s a possible double,” Suso told Gazzetta dello Sport, referring to Champions League qualification and winning the Coppa Italia.
“Gattuso’s perfect. He’s the right Coach, at the right time in the right place. For us he’s a point of reference.
“He’s given a lot to me personally and I think I gave him so much too. In the midst of difficulties, he managed to keep the team competitive and compact.
“Even at Juve, if you take away four of their starters they suffer. We were still up there in the midst of a thousand injuries.
“Paqueta and Piatek are two great players who can give us so much, but I also saw many others do very well in the first months and then nothing after that.
“Let’s go slowly because I already feel there are too many comparisons with those who won Ballon d’Ors [Kaka and Shevchenko].
“Kalinic made everyone happy at first, but then he got into some difficulty and was criticised.
“It’s not fair on them because if they play poorly in two games, the opposite will be immediately said about them.
“It applies to everyone: now things are good but if we lose twice, we’ll be back to being disastrous.
“That aside, Piatek is a nice lad and Paqueta is taking Italian lessons so he can learn the language as quickly as possible.”
The Spain attacker was then asked about Gonzalo Higuain’s exit last month.
“I still consider him to be one of the best strikers in the world,” he assured.
“If he wasn’t happy here, he did well to go to London. For me he did well for us, but ironically it helped Cutrone, from whom he took minutes but otherwise taught.
“For everyone he was a good teammate.”
