SPAL Coach Leonardo Semplici insists his side “deserved the lead” against Atalanta, but “their quality players” made the difference.
Andrea Petagna had given the visitors an early lead against Gian Piero Gasperini’s men, but goals from Josip Ilicic and Duvan Zapata after the break turned the game around.
In turn, SPAL were left empty-handed from their trip to Bergamo, although Semplici found positives in the encounter.
“We produced a good performance against Atalanta, who I think are the fittest team in the league,” he told Radio Rai.
“We deserved the lead, but the difference was made by their quality players who produced two or three great moments.
“We’re disappointed to have lost but we have to continue as we have always done to reach our objective.
“There were a few too many mistakes. We have to be more careful because these teams will punish you. We have to figure out where we did well and where we went wrong as we must try to cut out those dangerous situations.”
The defeat leaves SPAL just four points above the relegation zone as they host Fiorentina next weekend.
