Ivan Marcano believes Roma can "repeat our Champions League exploits from last season" and admits it will be a "special feeling" to face former club Porto.
The Giallorossi host their rivals in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday night, hoping to take an advantage into the second leg next month.
Marcano is confident that they're capable of matching their run last season, and concedes there will be a sentimental factor for him.
"We've had a series of positive and negative results, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster season in some ways," the defender told reporters.
"I believe we can repeat our exploits in the Champions League last season. It will be difficult, but we'll try. Porto are the first step.
"They're an opponent I know well, it will be a special feeling facing my former team."
It was suggested to the 31-year-old that Porto were seen as the favourable draw for many teams left in the Champions League, but Marcano warned against complacency.
"In football, you never know," he added.
"Some fans may consider Porto to be the weakest out of the teams remaining, but they are a great side. They showed that in the group stage by claiming top spot and going unbeaten."
