Stefano Pioli felt Fiorentina “deserved the victory, even aside from the incidents” that saw SPAL penalised by VAR technology.

It was a strange 4-1 result at the Stadio Mazza, as SPAL had gone 2-1 up when VAR was used to identify a previous penalty foul on Federico Chiesa, so their goal was considered void and the Viola took the lead instead.

“It was an intense match,” confessed Pioli on DAZN.

“The situation moving from 2-1 for them to our penalty was decisive, but we did not deserve to be behind at that point anyway.

“The lads showed great spirit and we created so many chances today. There are definite improvements, although I have to allow some errors to young players so they can learn going forward.”

Giovanni Simeone came off the bench to score on another counter, ending his goal drought.

“Giovanni is a great striker and in my view a first choice player, but I have choices to make and limited places. We’ve got to do well as a team and look ahead to the upcoming matches too.”

With German Pezzella out injured today, the captain’s armband was worn by Federico Chiesa.

“He is a player we need on the field.”
