Radja Nainggolan relished the win over Sampdoria, albeit “by a slim margin again,” and hopes Mauro Icardi can return for Inter as soon as possible.

Danilo D’Ambrosio’s opener was cancelled out by Manolo Gabbiadini, but Nainggolan’s strike from the edge of the area proved decisive in this 2-1 result.

“The teams behind us are pushing, so we must do our duty. We’re also in the Europa League knockouts and we’ll see what happens,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

The build-up to the match was dominated by controversy over Icardi, who was stripped of the captaincy on Wednesday, then pulled out of both the Rapid Vienna game and this Serie A fixture, officially due to a knee problem.

As a sign of reassurance, Icardi sat in the stands with his wife and agent Wanda Nara.

“I think there has been too much talk about things outside of football and it’s distracting. I hope they resolve themselves, because this is a united squad and we want to win together.

“Mauro has always overcome obstacles, so I hope for him and for us that he can come back as soon as possible. He has shown what he is capable of, we have a striker who is doing well at the moment, but if we want to go far, we need everyone.

“I had some problems in the past, but I am focused only on playing football and giving my best for this team. We won by a slim margin again, but the important thing is to win.”
