Sime Vrsaljko cut his Inter loan spell short because the surgery means he’ll “be out for 8-10 months and I won’t return until I am 100 per cent ready.”

The full-back was meant to see out the season on loan from Atletico Madrid with option to buy, but was sent back to Spain in January.

He managed only 13 competitive appearances for the club and a recurring knee problem eventually required an operation.

“There’s no mystery about it, the recovery process will take 8-10 months. This is normal for the type of surgery I had, which went very well and that is the most important thing,” the Croatia international told Sportske Novosti.

“What I can say for certain is that I won’t return until I am 100 per cent fit. After all the problems I had and the horrible feeling I’d have to give up football forever, my priority is to reach peak fitness and return for the battles to come.

“I am in no rush, I will return stronger than ever.”
