There were several fans spotted at San Siro wearing Inter jerseys with ‘Godin 2-0’ on the back, referencing not only the Atletico Madrid defender’s imminent arrival as a free agent next season, but also his goal when beating Juventus 2-0 in the Champions League.

“I am happy, we are at a very advanced stage in negotiations and it was nice to see Godin score yesterday,” the Inter chief told Sky Sport Italia.

“As for the rest, let’s just say that I am very optimistic and believe that we’ll be able to make an official announcement pretty soon.”

If Godin is on his way to Inter, then Icardi’s future at the club remains in doubt. He has not played since he was stripped of the captaincy and, despite medical tests showing nothing wrong, remains out of the squad with a knee problem.

“We don’t know when Icardi will return, you in the media seem to know more than us. We’re waiting for him and I have nothing more to add to what has already been said. We’re hopeful he can return as soon as possible, when he recovers from this pain in his knee.

“My work is to get to know this club in depth, but I wasn’t worried when I took the job and I am not worried now. We must all give the right motivation to get back to the glories of the past.

“The club is first and foremost. For example, there’s a club in Copenhagen that has written on its badge: ‘Nothing above the club.’ We must go forward with that same motto in our minds.”
