Marco Benassi said nobody can be as motivated as Fiorentina to win the Coppa Italia. “We want to dedicate it to Davide Astori.”
The Viola are in the semi-final first leg against Atalanta on Wednesday, while Lazio and Milan are the other contenders.
Astori was the club captain and we are approaching the one-year anniversary of his sudden and still unexplained death in the team hotel in Udine.
“When I arrived in Florence, Astori was the first player I met,” Benassi told Tuttosport.
“It didn’t take long to realise he was always the first to arrive and was always there. He was genuinely our reference point within the squad.
“He is still present today, because we all work so hard to put his advice into practice and try to ensure he is proud of us. That is not enough, because we dream of winning the Coppa Italia so we can dedicate it to him.
“It’s going to be a difficult and well-balanced encounter with Atalanta, as they are tough to beat, but we believe in ourselves. Last season we held Atalanta to two draws, while we beat them this season.”
