“If anything, they make me proud,“ said the Coach at a Press conference, commenting on comparisons with former Rossoneri boss and Catenaccio proponent Nereo Rocco.

“Rocco invented catenaccio and won Italy’s first European Cup in his dugout. There’s a team who play like that in Atletico Madrid, who have reached Champions League Finals and won their domestic League.

“Tomorrow’s a crucial game for us, so we’ll have to take the field without thinking about the derby or other things.

“I know De Zerbi well. I picked up only one point against him last season, so I know what kind of football he likes to play.

Sassuolo have important players to watch out for because they play with the ball well. We’re preparing for the game as if we were facing a big boy.

“I’ve heard how I geared us up to draw with Lazio in the Coppa Italia, but I ask how can you prepare for a game like this?

“There are some games when a player like Piatek does more work, but I’ve always seen him smiling.

“He’s happy with his teammates and he’s like he’s always been. Cutrone must work with enthusiasm and desire.

“He came on against Atalanta and Empoli and did well. Now he must keep working. Right now he’s being penalised by our formation, but in football hard work pays off.

“If someone has a long face, it means they care. The important thing is to respect the people who work for the club and he hasn’t done anything wrong so far.

Andre Silva? He wanted to leave and we listened to him. He’s a player with great room for growth.”

Suso failed to score or assist a teammate throughout February, prompting calls for Gattuso to drop the Spaniard.

“Suso’s in a moment of self-doubt so we need to know how to help him, but for me there’s no problem,” assured the tactician.

“He’s had a quiet month and he’s paying for something on a technical level, but he has all the quality to take us forward. He must feel comfortable.

“Paqueta? I have a feeling that you [journalists] worry too much about his defensive game, while he’s much more natural on the ball.

Romagnoli renewed his contract a few months ago. He’s our captain and he must keep growing.

“The rumours aren’t an issue. He’s happy and proud to be here and be our captain. He’ll stay here.

“I’m not a magician, we’re only thinking about ourselves and then we’ll see where we finish. Certainly all our remaining games are Finals.”
