Roberto De Zerbi appreciated Sassuolo’s approach to Milan, even if there were errors, which included the red card.

The Neroverdi were unlucky at San Siro, as Pol Lirola got the final touch on the only goal of the game, while Jeremie Boga hit the woodwork and Andrea Consigli was sent off.

“It’s a young team, we gave our all and I congratulated the lads on their performance,” De Zerbi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We need that kind of positive attitude against the smaller clubs too, the ones where we might assume we are favourites, because nothing can be taken for granted. We need to be more consistent, both in our football and our mentality.

“I don’t want to talk about the referee and I never have. We got it wrong with the preventative marking, Consigli misjudged the ball, but then that is one of the keys to the way Sassuolo play, we don’t just leave the goalkeeper standing on the goal-line.”

De Zerbi’s rapport with Gennaro Gattuso goes a long way back, as they had a touchline row in the Serie C promotion play-offs.

“Gattuso gave me the biggest disappointment of my career, Foggia-Pisa, and the most satisfying moment, when Benevento beat Milan at San Siro only to be relegated a day later.”
