Fabio Quagliarella had managed to equalise from the spot, but Robin Gosens scored the winner from the tightest of angles.

“It was a tough and intense match, open to any result,” the Coach told DAZN after a 2-1 result.

“Atalanta made more of their chances and we did not. A draw probably would’ve been the right result, looking at the game overall, but perhaps they had slightly more in possession.

“It was a good performance, but the result does not reward us. Gaston Ramirez was unable to play 90 minutes and we had to put him on earlier than expected, as Riccardo Saponara got injured.

“Towards the end, Pierluigi Gollini made a super save on Albin Ekdal.”

As this was a showdown for Europe and Samp lost at home, does Giampaolo still believe in their chances?

“There are 11 games left and this is a step back, but we’re still in the running. There are 33 points up for grabs and we must be competitive to the end.”
