Gattuso has taken Milan to third in Serie A, on course for a place in next season’s Champions League, prompting praise from his former Rossoneri teammate.

“I would say there are two, on the one hand, there’s the tactical strength that he’s given the team,” Zambrotta told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“On the other, there’s the skill he’s shown in getting the best out of his players and letting them grow.

“Bakayoko’s development has been impressive, although Biglia’s return has offered an extra solution in midfield.

“There’s also the defence, from the serenity that Donnarumma plays with to the compactness of the Musacchio-Romagnoli pairing in central defence. They’ve grown a lot.

“I also like the way Suso and Calhanoglu are being used. Rino has chosen the most suitable solution for the players at his disposal.

“He puts out a solid team, where everyone gives a helping hand defensively. The signing of Piatek did the rest.”
