Sampdoria have denied reports that striker Gregoire Defrel was involved in a police chase on Sunday night.

Defrel was alleged to have been pursued by police after Samp’s 2-1 defeat to Atalanta on Sunday, before crashing his car and being found to have had a high level of alcohol in his blood.

However, the Blucerchiati hit back in a statement: “With regards to what happened at night concerning Gregoire Defrel, the Sampdoria board verified with police headquarters in Genoa that there was no car chase.

“The police intervened following a road accident on Corso Europa, therefore the Municipal Police also took action.

“Defrel didn’t try to get away from any controls. He collaborated and showed willingness to discuss the incident.

“Any further reconstruction of the facts, therefore, is considered devoid of any substance.”
