Lautaro Martinez has admitted that while Inter ‘need’ Mauro Icardi back, he feels ‘very good’ alongside Juventus’ Paulo Dybala.
Martinez has replaced Icardi as Inter’s No 9 for the past six weeks, most recently scoring the winning goal against Milan in the Derby della Madonnina from the penalty spot.
“It’s not a great situation, neither for him nor for us who are in the squad,” the striker told TNT Sports.
“We can’t do much. He must make a decision with the people working with him and around him.
“We’re on the fringes. We’re people who work like him and we’re available to the club. What happens around him must be resolved with his camp and the club.
“I’m very happy with how things are going. I was able to play in my first Milan derby, scoring a goal and winning it.
“It’s a truly fantastic source of satisfaction. I couldn’t even sleep after it because of the all the joy I was feeling.
“What’s changed? Minutes, but I always try to improve every day. The process of adapting to European football takes a few months, and it also depends on the type of player.
“I certainly feel like a more complete player now, one who has learned a different type of football.
“The Italian League is very competitive, where tactics are important in every game. The training sessions are different, so I’d say that’s how you grow as a player, learning a another type of football.”
Dybala has been linked with a potential swap involving Icardi, and the Juve forward is currently on Argentina duty with Lautaro...
“I feel very good playing alongside Dybala. We understand each other very well,” added the 21-year-old to ESPN.
“From the first moment I arrived in Italy, Icardi helped me a lot. He’s always come across very well to me.
“What he’s going through is a personal matter that he must resolve himself. Replacing him a big responsibility? Yes, we know very well what Mauro means to the club and what he’s done.
“Still, I’m trying not to get crushed by the pressure. Mauro is very important to the squad. We hope everything gets resolved because he’s very important for us and we need him.”
