Quagliarella could make his first appearance for nine years during the international break, Italy having recalled the forward on the back of his 21-goal campaign for Samp.

“I’m living through this experience with great enthusiasm and serenity,” the 36-year-old told Rai Sport.

“I’m at an age where you’re able to manage emotions, so it’s all very nice in the sense that I’m very happy to be here.

“This is the Italian national team, there’s no need to give caps away. if the CT calls up certain players, it’s because he’s convinced they can give a big hand and that’s why I’m here.

“Being called up by the Azzurri is a great source of satisfaction. There are so many strong young lads here and for me it’s nice to be here, even if I’m playing it by ear.”
