Arsenal reportedly sent scouts to watch Cagliari midfielder Nicolò Barella as he scored his debut Italy goal, but the price-tag is over €50m.
The 22-year-old was on target in the 2-0 victory over Finland on Saturday evening, which opened their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal had scouts in the stands of the Dacia Arena in Udine specifically to view Barella.
The midfielder impressed and was arguably Man of the Match, which will only have further boosted his growing price-tag.
Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini had already told the Corriere dello Sport this weekend that the bidding war was just beginning.
“Barella was never close to a January exit. I cannot deny that there was concrete interest from Napoli in January. Maurizio Sarri also wanted him at Chelsea. As for Inter, that was just a chat, nothing more.”
The Cagliari President was asked about Barella’s price-tag, which has been reported in the €45-50m bracket.
“Maybe it’ll take more, seeing as next year it is his beloved Cagliari’s Centenary,” he smiled.
