Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti believes the problems with Italian football are ‘cultural’ after taking issue with the ‘insults’ he has received.

Ancelotti returned to Serie A with Napoli last summer after nine years away, managing Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in that time.

“I was abroad for nine years and throughout that time I never received an insult,” he said upon receiving an ethics award at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

“I’d forgotten that you are over here. In Italy we need to improve in terms of both sporting culture and infrastructure, starting from stadia, including the one at Napoli. We still have lots to improve on.”

The 59-year-old then reiterated his belief that he had married into a ‘winning’ project at the San Paolo.

“I always say one thing to my Presidents: in football you can win, draw or lose. The worst thing that can happen is to lose, no more than that,” he stressed.

“Napoli have a winning project: the club started over after having gone bankrupt and now we’re always in the Champions League and top positions.

“I believe we’re capable of winning a League or a cup. Obviously we have to improve on a few things, but we’re working in that regard.”
