Roberto Mancini has asserted that Italy’s objective is ‘to make fans enthusiastic about us again’ ahead of Tuesday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Liechtenstein.

Italy kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Finland, and Mancini promised changes for their second and final match of the international break.

“I’ll be able to change some players, but we must have our own identity, regardless of our opponents,” he said at a Press conference.

“It’ll be important to address the match quickly so it doesn’t become complicated. Our objective is to make fans enthusiastic about us again.

“We have no choice but to do something different compared to the past in order to excite them. We’ll change something.

”I haven’t made any decisions yet, but I’ll definitely change 3-4 players, maybe even a few more. We still have a lot of work to do.

“Verratti can play as a ‘regista’, but so can Sensi and Barella. They are players who can play in front of the defence and sometimes they do it during the game.

“They’re tactically good players, who understand match situations. Our game shouldn’t make us think about our opponents.

“We’ll have to be very aggressive tomorrow night. The game isn’t a foregone conclusion. We saw it during Brazil-Panama.”

Ciro Immobile was criticised again for another goalless performance against Finland, so what was the CT’s assessment of the Lazio striker?

“When making the considerations, you must take into account that Quagliarella came on when the game was most open, while Immobile played at the start when [Finland] were very deep,” he replied.

“He did a great job and played in a difficult situation.”
