“We know that De Rossi is a fundamental player for us, he has given so much to the sport and can continue to give even more. I hope he returns to being the De Rossi we know, as because of injuries, he is quite inconsistent,” Totti told Sky Sport Italia.
Amid the injury problems, the veteran has hinted he could call it quits at the end of the season.
“We’ll see. We talk about it daily, we will sit down at the end of the season and he’ll tell me if he wants to continue and at that point we’ll talk about the future.”
Monchi walked away for his return to Sevilla, so for the moment Frederic ‘Ricky’ Massara has taken over as director of sport, but Totti could be given more power next term.
“Everyone is talking about the possibility of a different role. We’ll see what happens in future. I can tell you that if I were to take on a new position, I’d change some things.
“I’ve already spoken to the club about it, but this isn’t the right time to discuss it here. Roma come first and foremost.”
Totti is reported to be one of those who pushed for Claudio Ranieri to come in as caretaker manager when Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked.
“I got involved, as did the other directors. He is the person who can give us a big contribution. He knows the club, the fans, the environment around Roma.
“He always did well when taking over teams mid-season and was the right person once we decided to change Di Francesco. He can push us towards the Champions League qualification, which is our only remaining target for this season.”
