Sinisa Mihajlovic “always believed” Bologna would climb out of the relegation zone, but reveals Mattia Destro injured himself during the goal celebration against Sassuolo.

It was a dramatic Emilia-Romagna Derby at the Stadio Dall’Ara, as Erick Pulgar came off the bench to convert a penalty with his first touch, Jeremie Boga’s strike was at first disallowed and then given via VAR, before substitute Destro’s last-gasp winning header.

“I believe in safety and I always believed. It might require almost a miracle, but I still believe,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

This result allowed Bologna to leapfrog Empoli and leave the bottom three for the first time in four months.

“I could already tell even before I came here that Bologna could do much better. This is a fundamental victory, now we are out of the relegation zone, but there are still nine rounds to go.

“We’ve got to earn our Serie A status on home turf.”

Mihajlovic certainly made an impact, because both goals came from substitutes Pulgar and Destro.

“Blerim Dzemaili did well to leave it to Pulgar, as they are the two penalty takers and can choose between them every time. Destro wasn’t meant to come on when it was 1-1, but after their equaliser, we had nothing more to lose.

“Destro actually hurt himself during the celebrations and I hope it’s nothing bad, because I wanted to play him in the midweek round.”
