Pierpaolo Marino believes Financial Fair Play rules “penalise Milan and Inter. The owners are not allowed to put new money into football.”

Marino worked as sporting director at Udinese, Napoli, and Atalanta and was responsible for bringing players like Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik to Serie A.

“The Financial Fair Play rules lead to absurdities, as we have two massive clubs in Milan that could bring Milan and Inter back to the top again, but they can’t do anything,” he told Rai Sport.

“The Financial Fair Play rules lead to absurdities, as we have two massive clubs in Milan that could bring Milan and Inter back to the top again, but they can’t do anything,” he told Rai Sport.

“The owners must be allowed the opportunity to put their money into football. There are large companies that buy clubs, they could clear their debts, but they are not allowed to put new money into football.

“Inter could do a great shopping campaign, but they can’t do it. They penalise big cities and big clubs!”

Meanwhile, the price-tags of top players are sky-rocketing, well out of the reach of most sides.

There is set to be a bidding war this summer for Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

“He’s worth more than €80m. Today there is a shortage of good defenders and strikers, so it is easy to arrive at such high valuations,” continued Marino.

“We will also see that when we see how much (Napoli President Aurelio) De Laurentiis asks for Kalidou Koulibaly.

“If Real Madrid want to sign Miralem Pjanic from Juventus, he will probably cost around €100m.”
