Former Roma director of sport Monchi admits results “weren’t what I expected, but I have no regrets.”

Monchi left the Giallorossi in March, less than 24 hours after Coach Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked, and returned to his old job at Sevilla.

“I came back here earlier than I expected. The results at Roma weren’t what I expected, but I have no regrets,” he told reporters in Spain.

“The best night was when we eliminated Barcelona from the Champions League, the worst was the defeat to Porto.

“The hardest thing for me was being apart from my family, but I would go back to Rome.”

Monchi was speaking ahead of the local derby between Sevilla and Real Betis, but admits it is incomparable to the Derby della Capitale.

“I experienced the Rome derby, but it is different there. Rome is a different city. The derby that is more like Sevilla-Betis is the one between Genoa and Sampdoria.

“It is played everywhere, on the streets, in the neighbourhoods, at the supermarket. There are 11 players that represent a hundred thousand.”

Monchi spent 17 years as director of football at Sevilla and oversaw the victory of nine trophies in that time period.

“The club continues to evolve and that is what brought me back. I had more interesting offers, but I decided to return. I’m 80% sports director and 20% a fan of Sevilla, but this week I am more a fan.”
