Sampdoria Coach Marco Giampaolo was ecstatic after his side’s 2-0 win in the Derby della Lanterna. “Fabio Quagliarella teaches me and not the other way around.”

Gregoire Defrel opened the scoring in the first half before Quagliarella netted his 21st Serie A goal of the season from the penalty spot and Giampaolo sang his praises.

“We have so many good players I find it hard to select a team. Whoever plays more often deserves it because they are of above average quality,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Take Quagliarella as an example. It isn’t what I can teach him, more what he can teach me. Just watching him makes you learn something new.

“Defrel arrived here coming off an injury, but is now showing that he is a strong and important player. He is a first teamer like many others, including Gianluca Caprari, Quagliarella, Manolo Gabbiadini, Riccardo Saponara and Gaston Ramirez."

Giampaolo beat Sven Goran-Eriksson's record for going unbeaten in the derby by making it four wins and two draws since he took over.

“I was aware of the statistics, but not losing the derby was the most important thing. I said we should play two games, one technical and one emotional. The derby is like a bullfight that makes you spend energy unnecessarily with nervous tension.

“We went ahead early and then doubled the lead at the start of the second half. Psychologically it becomes difficult at that moment and I asked my players to manage the game better, but it was so loud they couldn’t hear me.”
