Lucas Torreira’s agent confirms Carlo Ancelotti wanted the midfielder from Sampdoria, but he “already had a verbal agreement with Arsenal.”

The Uruguay international was on target in the 2-0 first leg win of their Europa League quarter-final.

“Ancelotti wanted me to bring him to Napoli up until the last minute, but we already had a verbal agreement with Arsenal,” representative Pablo Bentancur told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“He rang me personally to try and convince me, but I’m sorry I just couldn’t bring him to Napoli.”

The 23-year-old joined the Gunners from Sampdoria in July and has had an impressive start to his career at the Emirates Stadium, playing 41 times while scoring twice.

The agent went on to talk about Boca Juniors’ Agustin Almendra and Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde, who have also attracted the interest of the Partenopei.

“In my opinion, Almendra is a phenomenon, he has great technical qualities and has the characteristics of Carlos Tevez.

“Napoli wanted him, they made an offer to Boca, but they won’t sell him for a while yet. I think they still want him.

“We’ll have to see if he is able to bear the weight of playing for a big club like Napoli.

“Valverde is a midfielder with great quality and would be a great signing for them. He is part of the great generation of Uruguayan midfielders that have been coming out in recent years.”
