Gian Piero Gasperini compared Atalanta’s 0-0 draw with Empoli to the Europa League play-off against FC Copenhagen. “We were unlucky.”
The Orobici dominated the game to a ridiculous degree, forcing Bartlomiej Dragowski into 17 saves and with a total 50 attempts, yet it ended goalless.
“We have regrets over the result, but were also very unlucky,” Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia.
“After the first 10 minutes, we’d already had a couple of clear chances. Nights like this can happen, when you don’t finish it off. We already experienced it earlier this season against FC Copenhagen.”
That Europa League preliminary round in August also ended 0-0 and Atalanta went out on penalties.
“In any case, we picked up a point and that allows us to keep clear of the teams behind us in the table. The squad is in good shape and we’ll try to fight for Europe over the remaining six games.
“The smaller clubs make it more and more difficult to play in the final weeks, as Empoli already played well against Juventus, Napoli and Udinese.”
