Luciano Spalletti believes Inter have ‘reduced the gap on Napoli and Roma’ ahead of their clash with the latter in Serie A on Saturday.

Inter look good for third place as they lead nearest challengers Milan by five points and are an extra clear of Roma, who have finished above the Nerazzurri in recent seasons

“Our rope is being pulled at the right point, neither is it too loose nor about to break. Now let’s go and pinch it willingly,” Spalletti said at a Press conference.

“Roma are a great team. To be fighting with those who have been on the podium of the League means the work we’re doing is correct and that we’ve reduced the gap with clubs like Napoli and Roma.

“I’m not interested in commenting on the defeats of others. I’m interested in there being objective evaluations of the path we’re taking and the work we’re doing.

“When you play knockout ties, you must be at 100 percent or at least 90%. It didn’t happen for Napoli, not even Juve who lacked crucial players.

“It also wasn’t the case for us against Eintracht, to me that tie didn’t cause any embarrassment for the difficulties that were there.

“On the contrary, it’s good that we’ve avoided the risk of our exit affecting our season. it means that there’s professionalism on our part.

“Lautaro and Icardi are doing well, they both deserve to play. The choice I make will be a coherent one.

“I prefer to talk about my own players. Dzeko is a very fearsome opponent. As for the rest, ask Ausilio.”

The Coach then had his say on Ajax’s emergence as a European force and why his club traded Nicolo Zaniolo for Radja Nainggolan last summer.

“We say that the building from the back, with the goalkeeper, doesn’t work,” he added.

“We did the deal this way to make the climb and close the gap quickly. There’s no time for us to plan calmly.

“For every decision we made, we had to account to our majority shareholder, which is Financial Fair Play.

“We were forced to sell promising youngsters like Zaniolo. We made sacrifices to bring Nainggolan here, to make the difference immediately, for the good of Inter.”

Finally, Spalletti was asked about former employers Roma and, in particular, Francesco Totti.

“I have memories of seasons that I lived through in a very heartfelt way,” he concluded.

“They’re beautiful things that I’ll never forget. They know what to do with Totti at Roma.

“I find it difficult to give advice. Whatever choice they make, they’ll remain strong.”
