Deputy Italy PM and Milan fan Matteo Salvini has hit back at Leonardo, claiming that suspending games for racist chanting is ‘bizarre’

Leonardo felt Milan’s 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Wednesday should have been halted after Franck Kessie and Tiemoue Bakayoko were racially abused.

The sporting director also called out Salvini for not commenting on the chants, but the right-wing politician believes the ‘imbeciles’ were right to be ignored.

“I read the interview with Leonardo, asking for the match to be suspended the other night because of some imbeciles chanting,” he told ANSA.

“The chants from some imbeciles aren’t stopped by the suspension of games, but by 99 percent of the fans who are polite and respectful.

“That a director of a prestigious club like Milan sticks with the suspension of matches and makes controversy with referees, as a fan, as an Italian and as a minister, seems bizarre to me.”
