Torino President Urbano Cairo had never beaten Milan before, but is already looking ahead to Friday’s Derby della Mole with Juventus.

The Granata won the showdown 2-0 in a packed house and caught the Rossoneri on 56 points, but are technically in front due to a superior head-to-head record.

Roma are now fourth, but will be replaced in that position if Atalanta beat Udinese on Monday.

“I am happy with the victory, especially as in my time at the club, I’d never managed to beat Milan,” Cairo told Sky Sport Italia.

Toro hadn’t defeated the Rossoneri in Serie A since November 2001.

“The players were so fired up and determined to win, they didn’t even have the slightest performance anxiety. We now have to think about next Friday and an extremely important game against Juventus.

“It’s always a derby, so the Bianconeri will give their all and we’ve got to be on our toes. If we repeat tonight’s performance, that’ll be a very good start.”

Cairo was asked if this was his proudest moment since taking over the club from the verge of bankruptcy, but the job is not done yet.

“We had other wonderful moments, like winning at the San Mames in the Europa League, but above all our promotion into Serie A in front of thousands at what was then the Stadio Delle Alpi after putting together an entire transfer campaign in a week by borrowing players and signing free agents. Nothing has come close to that yet.

“Walter Mazzarri is doing a great job, as he has given us an identity and a way of playing that is paying off. The players are giving their all and we as a club are always ready to help them resolve any small or large problems they might have.

“The race for Europe is still wide open, but I saw a very determined Torino tonight. We must continue with that type of attitude.”
