Gattuso was a Milan player during one of the most successful periods of their history, winning two Scudetti and as many Champions Leagues between 1999 and 2012.

“Milan’s saving grace was always respect for the rules,” he told ANSA.

“Galliani and Berlusconi needed to intervene a few times. There was a great mentality, a great history. And that history was respected. Now it’s more difficult.

“The mentality of players has changed. When I left, I knew something had changed. I struggled to speak the language I’d heard for so many years.

“When I shaved on my first day at Milanello, I left two hairs in the sink… I took two slaps to the head from Costacurta and immediately understood the mentality.”

The 41-year-old has spent the past season-and-a-half in charge at San Siro, so how has he found coaching the Rossoneri today?

“Now there’s a different mentality and slowly you can work to find the one you had before, but let’s not forget that things have changed.

“A Coach must find a group of lads willing to make sacrifices, improve and do more. Now you have to be careful when you say something to them.

“if you tell them something, they start complaining and looking for excuses: things have changed.”
