The UK is currently in the process of leaving the European Union, and Cairo feels Premier League clubs have no incentive to give up their ‘own excellent product’ after a season that has seen them dominate the Champions League and Europa League.

“English football should aim for its own Brexit,” he told reporters.

“After the qualification of Liverpool and Tottenham in the Champions League Final, plus Arsenal and Chelsea for the Europa League Final, why should the Premier League give up its own excellent product to join the Super League?”

The media tycoon’s remarks come amidst plans for UEFA club competitions to be replaced with a so-called Super League, which would also effectively absorb domestic League football.

Cairo then denied reports that he had let his sporting director join Roma.

“Petrachi will stay with me until 2020, no problem,” he concluded.
