Dries Mertens shrugged off transfer speculation after scoring in a 3-2 loss to Bologna. “I don’t think that was my last game with Napoli.”

The 32-year-old joined the Partenopei in 2013 and that strike last night made it 109 goals in total during his time at the Stadio San Paolo, putting him alone in third in the all-time Napoli scoring charts, behind Marek Hamsik’s 121 and Diego Maradona on 115.

“We’re sorry for the 3-2 defeat, we wanted to finish the season with a win, it’s a pity we couldn’t do it,” he told Radio Kiss Kiss Italia.

“I’m happy that I scored of course, but it’s even more important how I play for the team, at the beginning of the season I had some difficulty getting used to the change in formation and finding a starting place.

“Now we have settled on this offensive system and I think it works well. When we play away from home the stadiums are always full of Napoli fans and it gives us a boost.

“We play a more direct game now and it is perhaps a little more attacking than before and we are playing well. However, we are having some bad luck in front of goal, hitting the woodwork 27 times this season.

“We will continue to train hard and we want to do better, but it’s not always easy when you change Coach.

“I still have a year left on my contract with Napoli and I’m happy here, I don’t think that was my last game.”
