The New York Times claims a deal has been struck with the Della Valle brothers, who are prepared to sell the club 17 years after rescuing it from bankruptcy in Serie C2.

“I cannot confirm or deny anything,” Commisso told the Corriere Fiorentino newspaper.

He was born in Calabria and moved to America as a child, making his fortune with a cable company and then purchasing the New York Cosmos.

“I am the only investor to have bought in Italy who was also born in Italy…”

Some of his previous statements have raised eyebrows, for example confessing that he has always been a committed fan of Fiorentina’s bitter rivals Juventus.

“Anyone growing up is a fan of Juve and I still am, but above all I am a supporter of the Nazionale, the Italian national team. I went to Florence when I was a child.

“I wish the Fiorentina fans a lot of luck for tonight’s game against Genoa. I know the Viola colours well and some of their old glories, like Kurt Hamrin and Gabriel Batistuta…

“I can assure you, I am more Italian than anyone in the world!”

Meanwhile, La Repubblica newspaper claim the figures provided by The New York Times do not cover all the expenses, suggesting the final takeover will cost closer to €200m than €135m.

It is also reported Commisso would be prepared to purchase Fiorentina even if they are relegated this evening.
