Milan have announced that Leonardo has stepped down from his role as sporting director.

A statement on Milan’s official website thanked Leonardo for his ‘important contributions in helping to take the club forward’ and noted his successor would be appointed ‘in due course’.

“Leonardo joined AC Milan in its hour of need a few short weeks before the closing of the summer transfer window,” said CEO Ivan Gazidis.

“Under very difficult circumstances he put his heart and soul into addressing a highly complicated situation and transmitting his energy and his ambition to the team.

“I am very grateful to Leonardo for everything he has contributed to our great Club and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

A former Rossoneri midfielder and Coach, the Brazilian only returned to San Siro last summer following Elliott Management’s takeover of the club.

However, his position had become untenable after the Diavolo missed out on Champions League qualification.

Milan are also expected to announce the exit of Coach Gennaro Gattuso on Tuesday evening.
