Sarri follows in Malesani's footsteps

Maurizio Sarri is the first Italian tactician to win the Europa League/UEFA Cup since Alberto Malesani with Parma in 1999, a gap of 20 years.

Chelsea flattened Arsenal 4-1 in Baku to take the Europa League, the first major trophy of Sarri’s career.

When Malesani won the UEFA Cup – the precursor to the Europa League – with Parma in 1999, Sarri was working at a bank.

This is the first major silverware in Sarri’s career and there were several other Italians involved in the Final tonight, as Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri played 90 minutes, while Davide Zappacosta came off the bench late on.
